Here are 3 suggestions to follow before seeking professional help.</p>
<p>1. Form is Function. Correct posture is essential to maintain while running, which requires tremendous muscle exertion for extended periods of time. So, &#8220;think tall&#8221; while you run. Many runners have a forward lean, which places extra stress on the muscles in the low back, which causes them to fatigue and eventually become strained (torn). This leads to back pain. Also, keep your shoulders relaxed and down. If you carry them up by your ears, the muscles of the neck will become tense and that&#8217;s when damage can occur, which leads to neck pain. Lastly, keep your chest thrust up and out. Not only will this decrease the muscle tension and burning in your mid-back, but it will also increase your lung capacity.</p>
<p>2. Flexibility and Strength. Stretch the back of your legs. Tight hamstrings and calves mean tight low back muscles because they are in the same kinetic chain. Gentle daily stretches of the hamstrings and calves will loosen your low back and help relieve and prevent low back pain. Strengthen your quads and abs. Running does not naturally develop the quadriceps, so you will need to do some cycling or find a knee extension exercise machine at the gym. Abdominal muscles stabilize the lower back, so do your crunches to keep them in shape. Increase the range of motion in the different sections of the spine. Move your neck and lower back individually in the directions of forward flexion, backward extension, bending side-to-side and rotation. Perform a shoulder shrug exercise by rolling your shoulders up and back, then down while squeezing your shoulder blades together. Your mid-back will feel better right away.</p>
<p>3. Self-Help For Your Injuries. Get a massage from a certified therapist. A good massage helps increase circulation to injured muscles, break up scar (non-functional) tissue, relieve back pain and neck pain, and speeds the healing process. When things hurt, use ice. Ice (cryotherapy) is nature&#8217;s anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Stay out of hot tubs for a couple of weeks. Remember, heat is one of the components of inflammation and can be like adding gasoline to a fire! Take extra calcium, magnesium, and postassium in bio-available (easily absorbed) forms. They are nature&#8217;s muscle relaxers. Take Vitamin D3, which helps modulate the inflammatory response. Get your omega 3 fatty acids for repair and health of muscles by taking fish oil capsules. Lastly, be sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep at night. This is the time when your body is healing most efficiently. Also, be sure to get enough rest between workouts.</p>
<p>When You Should See A Specialist. If back pain or neck pain continues a few weeks after following these suggestions, your injury may be more serious than you can handle alone. You may be suffering from a condition that involves more than just muscles. The health of the spine is dependent upon the individual movement of each of its 24 vertebrae. When one of these joints becomes injured and doesn&#8217;t move the way it is supposed to, it can cause irritation of the nerves that run between the vertebrae. These nerves control every function of the body, including the voluntary and involuntary muscles of the spine. Irritated nerves cause muscles to spasm. Spasm causes pain. The condition where abnormal function of a joint is interfering with a nerve is called a &#8220;subluxation&#8221;. Chiropractors are doctors who specialize in the relief of this condition without the use of drugs or surgery. Getting your spine checked for subluxations may be the key that will break the injury/pain cycle for you. Back pain or neck pain takes all of the pleasure out of running, or any activity for that matter. <p>If you can find any way to get more protein in your diet, I highly suggest it. Any protein is better than no protein. While you should and most likely will be getting most of your protein from food, you probably still need more. This is especially true if you workout regularly, which you should. Without the proper amount of protein in your diet, your muscles will be trying to suck every bit of protein that it can, why starve your poor muscles?</p>
<p>After choosing your supplemental form of protein, be sure to read the instructions thoroughly. There&#8217;s nothing worse than not following the directions on any dietary supplement. However, studies show that protein is one of the very few nutrients that you can never get enough of.</p>
<p>Ignore what others might say about having &#8220;too much&#8221; protein. It simply isn&#8217;t possible. Your body can never get enough protein, it&#8217;s constantly hungry for it! The last concern that you should have while taking protein supplements is getting too much, just be consistently making sure that you&#8217;re getting enough. Like I said though, you can never get enough.</p>
<p>Not all protein supplements are created equal. Some protein supplements have other ingredients that contain fat, carbs, and lots of calories. These types of protein supplements are especially good when you&#8217;re working out and need to recover. You&#8217;ll need to make sure that these calories and fats are good calories and fats however.</p>
<p>I also would not recommend taking protein supplements if you are not working out regularly. This is not because you could potentially get too much protein in your diet, but because you might be getting too much fat if it&#8217;s a supplement such as a shake. I do highly recommend protein shakes though.</p>
<p>With all of the information out there on the internet about protein supplements, it&#8217;s easy to get lost in all the noise. I highly recommend protein shakes since they taste great and a great for you!</p>
