Hello. This is Manny Hernandez, President of the Diabetes Hands Foundation, founder of TuDiabetes and someone who has had LADA (a form of type 1 diabetes) since 2002.

These are words that describe what the Diabetes Hands Foundation and what TuDiabetes mean to some of you. Words like community, people, help and support.

Today I come to ask you to help us translate this words into financial support for the Diabetes Hands Foundation.

If you can afford it, please make a tax-deductible donation to the Diabetes Hands Foundation. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by September 14. This money will be used to continue connecting people touched by diabetes through TuDiabetes and EsTudiabetes and developing diabetes awareness programs such as the Big Blue Test, this coming November 14 (World Diabetes Day).

Depending on the amount of your donation, you will be eligible for very special thank you gifts, including one of ten copies of the No-Sugar Added Poetry book autographed by Dr. Bill Polonsky (for those who donate more than $150). But any donation helps!

If you cannot afford it, please tell others about our campaign and help us fundraise. Click on the link next to this video for details on how you can raise funds to benefit the Diabetes Hands Foundation.

On behalf of the staff and volunteers at the Diabetes Hands Foundation and everyone that benefits from our programs around the world, thank you for your generous help and support!

Living with diabetes

According to a recent study by Dr. Mary Steinhardt, professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, type 2 diabetes is becoming the most prevalent health problem in the U.S., affecting more than 20.8 million people at an estimated cost of $132 billion annually.

In her study titled “A Resilience Intervention in African American Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: A Pilot Study of Efficacy,” Steinhardt worked with members of the Diabetes Coaching Program. The program is devoted to resilience education, diabetes self-management and biweekly support group meetings. She found that minority groups are affected at higher rates, with African Americans 1.8 times as likely to have Diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.

Richard Holmes has been living with type 2 diabetes for 10 years. For the past 23 years he has worked as a driver for the Texas State Library Records Management Division. Follow Holmes as he goes to work and his support group.

Visit http://www.dinaknight.com or http://www.elivinghealth.com or http://www.greenivore.com Join in an upcoming class taught by Gourmet Raw Vegan Chef Dina Knight either in person or online.

This video was made to tell a little bit about how Chef Dina Knight got started on a path to health and wellness, what her initial inspirations were, how she saw the differences between sick care and wellness. This video is a personal look into her life that so many other people are experiencing on a daily basis with their loved ones in the hospital, sick or dying of a preventable “lifestyle” disease. Heart Disease, Diabetes and obesity affect 1 out of every 2 people in the US, it’s time we made a change and started seeing how what we eat, how we live, and what we think will either lead us down a path towards health and wellness or that we can literally dig our own graves with our forks. This is part one of a several part interview of how she ended up with an amazing weight loss of over 115lbs. We hope you enjoy it, please pass this onto a friend, neighbor or loved one who you think might benefit from hearing this message and be sure and subscribe for future videos, also please visit the websites and join our mailing list so we can keep in touch. Bears Quarterback Jay Cutler Tells his Diabetes Story in New

Bears Quarterback Jay Cutler Tells his Diabetes Story in New Web Videos on chicagobears.com Rising star reveals emotions around diagnosis and how he’s managing diabetes in the NFL
October 2009 – As NFL quarterback Jay Cutler fought through illness during the 2007 season – constantly fatigued, losing 35 pounds, in what was later diagnosed as type 1 diabetes – he thought he might be dying.

That’s one of the revelations we hear from the Pro Bowl quarterback in a series of new Web videos about his life with diabetes, launched today on www.chicagobears.com. The videos are also available at www.touchdownsfordiabetes.com and www.jaycutlersix.com.

Produced by Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly), a worldwide leader in diabetes research, the “Jay Cutler on Diabetes” webisode series takes us inside Cutler’s life with diabetes on and off the field.

Episodes 1-3 were released today in conjunction with the Chicago Bears. The videos are part of Cutler’s work with Lilly on the Touchdowns for Diabetes camp scholarship program (www.touchdownsfordiabetes.com).

Future episodes will be launched in November during American Diabetes Month and will focus on Cutler’s efforts to connect with kids and families affected by diabetes. Lilly’s award-winning documentary film crew began shooting the videos in January, when Cutler and Lilly kicked off their national offseason tour of children’s hospitals.

In the episodes released today, Cutler describes being sick but not knowing what was wrong as he played through his first season as a starting quarterback in the NFL (then with the Denver Broncos).

“I kept it a secret for a while – obviously a lot longer than I should have,” Cutler says in the videos. “I thought it was something I was just going to bounce back from. A part of me just didn’t want to know…I didn’t know if I was going to continue to be able to play football.”

Cutler also talks about how he learned to manage the disease while becoming an elite NFL quarterback – and how he wants to connect with kids.

“It’s there every day, no matter where you go. You wake up with it, you go to sleep with it. Over time, you get used to it, and it becomes part of you. I’m not to that point yet,” he says.

“I’d like to use my story to be able to inspire kids that get diabetes. They think it’s the end of the world, they think can’t have dreams, do what they want to do. But that’s entirely false.”

To view Episodes 1-3 of the “Jay Cutler on Diabetes” series, visit www.chicagobears.com, www.touchdownsfordiabetes.com or www.jaycutlersix.com.

About Touchdowns for Diabetes
For every touchdown pass Cutler throws during the 2009 season, Lilly will send a child to diabetes camp by donating $1,000 to the American Diabetes Association’s “Camp Scholarship” fund – roughly the cost of allowing one child to attend a week of diabetes camp – through the Touchdowns for Diabetes program.

And for every pass Cutler completes in 2009, Lilly will donate $100 to the ADA Camp Scholarship fund to allow even more kids the chance to attend camp next summer. The ADA is the largest provider of diabetes camps in the world and is serving as the national champion for Touchdowns for Diabetes.

Through the Bears’ first four games, Cutler has thrown eight touchdown passes, run for another TD and completed 83 passes – already sending 17 kids to camp next summer.

For more information on diabetes camps, visit the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org/camp or the Diabetes and Education Camping Association at www.diabetescamps.org.
